Ice Dam Melting and Removal

Winter weather causes many problems for both businesses and homeowners. One of these problems, however, often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Yes, we’re talking about ice dam melting.

DAM ICE DAMS

Ice dams are caused when large amounts of ice forms at the edge of the roof, thus trapping any snow on the roof behind it. Having nowhere to go, the snow and water become trapped and begin piling up on the roof, eves, and entryways. With no relief from cold temperatures, ice still continues to form and spread as the melting water freezes again, pulling up roofing tiles and pushing its way into wall cavities. As interior home heat is wasted on melting the invading ice, water will soak up drywall and lead to wood rot and mold in exposed beams.

A Ticking Time Bomb

This sounds like a nightmare, but it can quickly become a reality. If ice dams have formed at the eaves of your roof, you should immediately take measures to melt the ice enough to let any trapped water flow away. Ignoring potential ice dams can result in costly insurance claims and lengthy home repairs, not to mention the stress and inconvenience that comes along with them.

The solution to eliminating and preventing ice dams is simple: melt the ice.

ICE BE DAMMED

The’s one option to consider for melting ice dams that never fails to entertain: flamethrowers. But since those generally aren’t readily available, heating blankets are the perfect choice for safe ice removal. Some websites will recommend calcium chloride melt or other chemicals, but these can have detrimental effects on concrete or surrounding plant life.

Heating Blankets

Heating blankets or ground thawing blankets can be used in ice melting to steadily reduce the ice load on your roof. You can simply plug it in and forget about it, giving you peace of mind and satisfaction as you call you contractor and cancel your appointment for him to fix what would have been a leaky roof.

Using a heating blanket is also handy due to its multiple uses. Powerblanket’s outdoor heating blankets provide rapid heat to parking lot snow, driveway ice, slippery sidewalks and other snow covered areas. Powerblanket products and their all-in-one heating solution provides a barrier of heat to help melt snow, ice, and thaw frozen ground at home or on the job by using a standard 120V 20amp plug to provide power to the heater.
