How Can I Prevent My Propane Tank from Freezing?

Propane tanks will freeze up when the ambient temperature drops below -44°F. This is because propane has a boiling point of -44°F. If the temperature is not greater than -45°F, your propane will not vaporize, and your tank will freeze. However, as the temperatures drop, and the volume of propane in your tank drops, as will your pressure. If you do not have a heating source, it is important to keep your propane tank as full as possible at all times, to avoid freezing.

Another situation that can cause a propane tank to freeze up is pressure rate. Drawing more pressure than your tank is designed for, or pulling large amounts of pressure in a short amount of time will result in freezing.

Keep It Full by Keeping It Warm

You can prevent your tank from freezing by keeping it full, which means filling your tank more often. This option may be expensive and annoying.  Or, you can look into heating systems. When researching ways to heat propane, safety is key. Try to find a heating method with safe heat, such as a heating blanket, or an insulated blanket, depending upon the amount of pressure needed. Active systems are pulse hydraulics and solar. The active systems are reactive because they can be programmed to respond to water system needs as season weather moves in and out as well as water quality variants dictate. However, only the most powerful active mixers can prevent ice buildup all winter long.

The bottom line is that if the environment is just right, moving the water alone is not a guarantee that the top portion of water is not going to freeze. The goal then is to minimize the tank damage from ice buildup in extreme cold climates. Ice can damage the controls, the interior or puncture a wall before you realize you have an ice buildup problem in your tank.

When searching for a solution for preventing ice buildup inside a storage tank, the most important thing to search for is uniformed heat. So CID1 covers areas where such hazards are normally present, and CID2 covers areas where such hazards aren’t normally present but certainly could be under abnormal circumstances. Most importantly, if a product is CID1 or CID2 certified, it means that product is safe to use in locations that are CID1 or CID2 rated hazardous locations.

Class I Division 2 and You

If the title of this article caught our interest, perhaps it’s because you already know a thing or two about Class I Division 2 certification, or maybe it’s a new term to you. Either way, here follows a general breakdown:

Hazardous locations are defined by the risks that are present. Some of the most common risks to property and person account for damage or injury through fire, explosion, electrocution, and other similar causes. Based on stipulations outlined by the NEC (standing for National Electrical Code) hazardous locations are defined by certain categories, or classes, and divisions.

Class I (and that’s a Roman-numeral one) is made up of risks posed by gases, vapors, and liquids, Class II is dusts of any sort, and Class III accounts for fibers and flyings. So in the case of a CID2 environment, we’re talking gases, vapors, and liquids that could be potentially dangerous. How dangerous is answered by the division with which the area is coded.

There are two divisions that define a classification under the NEC. If an area is classed under Division 1 (and they use Arabic numerals on this part) it means that the materials onsite are normally explosive and hazardous. Conversely, if an area is classed under Division 2, it means that the materials present are not in a flammable or explosive form in most cases but that they could become flammable or explosive by accident. Now, combing the class and division in CID2 means that the area has gases, vapors, and/or liquids present that could become flammable or explosive by accident but are not under normal circumstances.

How Can I Prevent Pipes from Breaking Between Crude Oil Pumps?

Trans-Alaskan PipelineApplying heat to your pipes will prevent your pipes from breaking when pumping crude oil. When you complete a pump and can’t clean your pipes, I recommend keeping the pipes warm to avoid build up. As you being a new pump, if there is an oil build up in the pipe, the pressure from the new pump can cause your pipes to explode.

There are four key things to remember when working with crude oil, be sure to know what oil you are working with.

  1. Crude oil can begin to solidify at ambient temperature.
  2. Some crudes can become rock hard at 60°F, while others do not.
  3. Crude oil is considered a hazardous chemical and should be handled with care.
  4. Heat is required to maintain the flow ability of the oil.

Because crude oil is considered a hazardous material and is combustible at temperatures between 230°F and 330°F. I recommend finding a safe and reliable heat source to work with that is certified for Class 1 Division 2 hazardous locations, and cannot heat over 150°F.

How Can I Safely Heat My Chemicals?Heating chemicals can provide a great challenge because they vary in temperature sensitivity and contain different flash points. Understand the your chemicals by referring to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information for temperature requirements. Current heating methods include:

  • steam bath
  • hot water bath
  • sand bath
  • oil bath
  • hot plate
  • heating mantle

These methods are safe, but cumbersome. They pose some challenges to controlling optimal temperature and overheating due to localized heat. Many chemical producers want some simple things in their heating solutions including:

  1. Uniformity of Heat to the entire surface of the container
  2. Because Chemical is reactive to high temperatures, a Low Skin Temperature of the heating apparatus is desired
  3. Accurate Temperature Control,  either pre-set or adjustable
  4. Simple design

To solve these problems, look for:

  1. An electrically heated full-wrap design that offers either pre-set temperatures or thermostatic control to maintain optimal temperatures with tight tolerances.
  2. A product that provides a safe heat without high skin temperatures to accomplish the task.
  3. A system with uniform heat so it does not compromise the material by overheating in one area, or creating hot spots and cold spots. Localized overheating causes damage to the material compromising expensive materials, rendering it unusable or simply reduces shelf life.

Where flammable chemicals are present, open flame and spark producing equipment should not be used. Use non-incendive equipment that meets the National Electric Safety Code (US DOC, 1993) Class I, Division 2, Groups A through D specifications. Use a product that meets these standards for flammable type chemicals and for materials located in hazardous locations, as per your needs.

How Can I Heat Instrumentation in CID2 Areas?What would happen in your CID2–rated oilfield operation if, in the middle of the winter, you could not get a proper pressure reading from an in-line pressure transmitter on an active well head?

For those in the railway sector, what would happen if, in the middle of the winter, you could not gather accurate scanner data recording and the transmittal of the immediate corrective action report necessary to insure that safety regulations are met?

Only one word fits both scenarios…disaster!

That is why you need a heating solution designed to ensure the success of your operation when you rely on essential instrumentation. For those in hazardous locations, you also need to find a heating solution certified with a CID2 rating.

Many of you are concerned with:

What Heating Solutions are Available for Hazardous Locations?

CID2Time is money in the oilfield, especially in hazardous locations. Downtime due to frozen pipes, valves, tanks and other equipment negatively affected by cold weather is extremely costly and frustrating. Large oil and gas producers can lose millions of dollars for each hour in down-time. In addition to down-time costs these companies will pay big bucks for parts and labor to get equipment up and running quickly. Fortunately, partnering with the right heat solution company that has the capability and expertise to provide heating solutions can help solve and prevent these problems.

Many areas within the oilfields are classified as a hazardous location so you will need to source heating products rated for those particular areas. The National Electric Code (NEC) defines hazardous locations as “areas where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers or flyings.”  Because electrical equipment can become a potential source of ignition for these volatile areas, certain precautions must be taken to remove the risk of fire and explosions.

The code writers have broken all hazardous locations into Classes and Divisions to make it easier to understand. The most common areas in the oilfield and gas plants are Class I Division 1 and Class I Division 2.  Class I type hazard is created by the presence of flammable gases or vapors in in the air, such as natural gas or gasoline vapor. When these materials are found in the atmosphere in a sufficient concentration, a potential for explosion exists, which could be ignited if an electrical or other source of ignition is present. In addition to the location, the Code concerns itself with the kind of conditions under which these hazards are present; specifically (I) normal or (II) abnormal. In the normal condition, the hazard would be expected to be present in everyday production operations or during frequent repair and maintenance activity. Abnormal circumstances would be an accidental breakage, leakage or unusual faulty operation where the hazardous material could be exposed.  

Three factors you will want to consider when looking to partner with a heating company for hazardous location applications are:

  1. Partner with an inventive company who has custom design and engineering capability, and that can help design solutions for those unique freezing issues. Not all applications are the same and a company that is agile and flexible can be your new best friend.
  2. Partner with a company that has experience designing heating solutions in the oilfield and completely understands the need.
  3. Lastly, you will need to work with a company that is safety certified, meeting both UL and CSA standards, for hazardous locations. In oilfield hazardous locations, you must find products certified to CID2 and look for those that can handle groups A through D, as well as one with the right temperature classification.
