Roofing Repair: Put the Proof in Your Roof

Roofing repair is a common, annoying necessity. With the sun’s heat, shingles (and a roof in general) will expand. This leads to nails popping out, which can leave holes for leaks. If you’re new here, leaks = bad. Read on for some basic steps on replacing a roof.

When you are repairing roof tile, consider renting a nail gun. Nail gun rental can cost around $20 a day, which can save you the time of hammering. Worth it!

Pro contractors, Georgia Pacific, released this video for specs and detailed instructions on laying sheathing and spacing for nails. This can differ depending on the spacing of your rafters. Also take into account nail length you will need to pierce through the necessary layers. According to IKO, “Roofing nails should be long enough to penetrate the roofing material and go 19 mm into OSB, solid wood, plywood or non-veneer wood decking, or through thickness of decking, whichever is less. To determine the nail length, you should consider the number of layers of shingles, shingle thicknesses, underlayment and flashings (installed on eaves, sidewalls and valleys, etc.).” Long story short, you still need to look into specifications for your particular roof.

1. Repair Your Sheathing

Begin by clearing any debris or leaves from your roof. Depending on your issue, you might need to repair or lay down new sheathing. Lay down your sheathing (also known as decking), which is usually half inch thick plywood, 8 feet long. This is standard. Obviously every roof is different and you might have to cut your sheathing to fit your roof’s measurements. Once you have your sheathing measured and cut, nail it to your roof’s rafters. Lay your sheathing in a brick pattern; this will give your roof extra strength. See Figure Below.

2. Lay Down Felt Paper

Felt paper is what sits between your shingles and your plywood sheathing. Staple your 6 inch starter strip of felt paper at the bottom of the roof, near the gutter. Leave 1 inch to overhang over the roof. This helps weather elements to drain off the roof into the gutter. Just like you will do with your shingles later, overlap the felt paper with about two inches over the piece of felt paper below it. Make sure to reinforce the tar adhesive strip on each piece of felt paper with nails.

3. Install Shingles

You can’t reshingle your roof without shingles! Figure out if you are repairing roof tile (usually clay, ceramic, or wood), asphalt shingles (also known as composite or 3 tab), or architectural shingles (also known as laminate). Lay your shingles starting at the bottom corner of the sloped roof with your starter course. Work your way to the top, overlapping the top shingles over the row beneath them. This will make it so precipitation doesn’t penetrate the roof and lead to damage. Work out from the bottom corner in a pyramid shape. Six nails along the tar strip of each shingle should be adequate for utmost performance and hold. Work from the bottom up, building from your original pyramid shape.

If you are doing roof shingle repair for an isolated part of your roof, perhaps a part where the shingles were damaged, don’t remove the old ones, just nail the new on top of them. This leaves a consistent, smooth look.

If you live in the United States, it’s likely your roof has asphalt shingles. American homeowners use asphalt shingles more than any other roofing product. Proper installation of this material will provide many years of protection. Unfortunately, if you are roofing in cold weather, you will need to take some extra precautions.

As temperatures decline, shingles become more brittle, and are easily cracked and broken. Cracks lead to one thing: water leaks.

Years ago it was common for shingles to crack and blow away in wind storms. Manufacturers solved this problem with a self-sealing compound that cements one shingle to another (a thermoplastic compound). Introduced in the mid-1960s, it is a common ingredient of virtually every asphalt shingle manufactured.
The sealing compound is activated by the heat of the sun. This sealing can happen in colder temperatures, but direct sunlight is required. North sloped roofs may not get the necessary sunlight until spring/summer. When the bonding process is complete, the shingles are less likely to develop wind-related leaks and failures.

Roofing In Cold WeatherThe ideal temperature range to install shingles is between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 and 27 degrees Celsius). If temperatures are colder than 70 degrees, the adhesive will not reach the ideal elasticity and will not create a perfect seal.

If roofing in cold weather is unavoidable, most asphalt shingle manufacturers require that a specialized adhesive is manually applied to each shingle for temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). Failure to apply the special adhesive in adverse temperatures will void the manufacturer warranty.

Viscosity is a complicated and sometimes confusing topic and achieving lower viscosity is a challenge during cold winter months.

VISCOSITY REDUCTION BASICS

A fluid that is viscous will be thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency.  Viscosity can be affected by friction and/or temperature.  For example, consider what happens when you need some ketchup on your burger.  If you simply invert the bottle and expect the ketchup to flow freely, you are a rookie in the sport of burger-eating.  A pro knows to shake the bottle and then to proceed with caution, because once you have decreased viscosity, due to the shaking, the ketchup can flow quite rapidly.

Now think about honey, certainly a substance that is thick, sticky and semifluid.  Simply shaking a jar of honey will not guarantee any flow.  Honey cooled in a refrigerator will have little to no flow because it has been cooled, but when warmed appropriately*, there is a viscosity reduction and honey will flow smoothly.

LOWER VISCOSITY AND TEMPERATURE

A fluid’s viscosity strongly depends on its temperature. Along with the shear rate, temperature really is the dominating influence. The higher the temperature is, the lower a substance’s viscosity is. The relationship between temperature and viscosity is inversely proportional for all liquids. A change in temperature always affects the viscosity – it depends on the substance just how much it is influenced by a temperature change. For some fluids a decrease of 1°C (1.8F) already causes a 10 % increase in viscosity.

5) USING A PROPANE HEATER

Winter construction professionals often use temporary, propane-powered heating equipment on the jobsite, making it easier to finish projects on time and on budget. In addition to providing more comfortable working conditions, propane-powered heaters can also maintain the ambient temperatures necessary for common tasks like drywall installation or painting. However, like any portable heating device, propane-powered heaters must be used and maintained properly.

When temperatures get too low, the propane will not flow consistently or effectively, and you may lose your heat altogether. Propane-tank efficiency will fall substantially as the temperature drops. As the temperature drops, so does the pressure in your propane tank, and the pressure in your propane tank directly affects the volume of propane you have to work with. Your extraction rate (how quickly and smoothly you can extract propane from the tank) will suffer as well. Without a heating source to assist in the pressure maintenance of your tank, you will have to keep it as full as possible in order to keep it working, even if temperatures are mildly cold.

Winter is full of fun activities: skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing are just a few. You’ll notice roofing did not make the list. Winter roofing is not at the top of anyone’s list, especially since low temperatures complicate the application process; but it becomes a necessity when your roof is damaged. Read on for some winter roofing tips.

HERE COMES THE SUNWinter Roofing

Most roofing materials utilize adhesives that require warm weather (or an artificial heat source) to cure and fasten. This means the best time to replace a roof is during the warmer months. Usually, radiation from the sun would soften the adhesive, allowing it to seal the shingles together properly. Colder than 70 degrees and the glue stays too viscous, leading to weathering and erosion. Installing a roof in the winter, without the proper precautions, will lead it to fail quickly, if not immediately. In warm weather, the sun’s heat will properly bond most roofing materials: asphalt shingle (also known as composition shingle), EPDM (rubber) single-ply membrane, roll roofing, peel and stick roofing, and modified bitumen. It becomes more expensive and more difficult to apply these materials in cold weather.

If winter installation is unavoidable, most asphalt shingle manufacturers require that a specialized adhesive be manually applied to each shingle for temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius). If shingles are applied below 40 degrees without the specialized adhesive, the manufacturer will void any warranty. This is because a cold climate not only effects the adhesive, but the actual shingles are less flexible and more likely to break if dropped. To help avoid this, try leaving your product in a warm truck bed as long as possible before bringing it up onto the cold roof.

If you plan to do roof repair in winter, you need an artificial heat source to keep your asphalt shingles warm until installation. The best temperature to install a roof is between 70 and 80° Fahrenheit (21 and 27° Celsius). If it’s warmer than 80 degrees, asphalt shingles have the opposite problem of becoming overly pliable. This leads contractors to overdrive nails, and foot traffic to easily erode the roof. Consider leaving your shingles in shaded areas when the weather is too hot.

EPDM

EPDM (rubber) membrane roofing is even more sensitive to its environment than asphalt shingles. Like a composition roof, EPDM requires high temperatures to soften the adhesive needed for curing. Even at high temperatures EPDM can be difficult to work with because it is so thick. As a result, manufacturers recommend it be higher than 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) to install EPDM. This temperature obviously isn’t very practical unless installers have a warm storage area to keep the adhesive pliable until it is used.

Of course, after talking about the Hot Box, you may be thinking: “yeah, but what if what I need to cure is bigger than 48” x 48”? Well, there are two simple answers to this question. In fact, our custom heating solutions can be designed and certified to Class I Division 1 (CID1) or Class I Division 2 (CID2) safety standards. We are certified for all four gas Groups, A, B, C, and D and up to a T4 Temperature Classification.  Many people who work in hazardous locations are familiar with these terms. For everyone else, here’s an explanation.

The classifications referenced as CID1 and CID2 regard the operation of electronic equipment in hazardous locations. CID1 is the identifier used for locations where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, mists or vapors could possibly exist under normal working conditions. This classification also covers locations where the same gases, mists or vapors may exist frequently due to repairs or maintenance in the area. It also includes potential scenarios where gases, mists or vapors could be leaked by faulty or damaged equipment.

CID2, on the other hand, represents all locations where concentrations of flammable gases and/or vapors and/or mists are present in the air under operating conditions outside of the norm. So CID1 covers areas where such hazards are normally present, and CID2 covers areas where such hazards aren’t normally present but certainly could be under abnormal circumstances. Most importantly, if a product is CID1 or CID2 certified, it means that product is safe to use in locations that are CID1 or CID2 rated hazardous locations.

Perhaps you’re already familiar with the old fable of The Ant and the Grasshopper from Aesop. If you’re not (and even if you are) we’ve recited it here. Below follows the most popular English renditions of the story:

Instant Road Repair

When Vern Fiehler needed to showcase his Instant Road Repair (IRR) product to the Juneau Alaskan International Airport, he met with problems on the first go around. In order to demonstrate his product, he needed to bring the IRR up to working temperature. He used a forced-air ceramic heater to do so, and the inevitable outcome was a catastrophe.

The ceramic heater overheated the IRR product by 40°F / 22°C—causing it to perform horribly. In the end, it cost Vern a pallet of product and embarrassment. Vern now uses Powerblanket® Bulk Material Warmers to demo his product, and he no longer has any problems with overheating or poor product performance.

One of our favorite examples to share in regards to this is that of Vern Fiehler, owner of Quick Road Repair in Alaska, and it has to do with asphalt material warming.

Vern had to bring his asphalt repair product up to working temperature before it could be applied. Unfortunately, his previous method of heating the product was very inefficient, and caused some real problems. When Vern met with the field maintenance crew of the Juneau Alaska International Airport in order to demonstrate the product he called Instant Road Repair (IRR), what happened was nothing short of disastrous. For the demonstration, Vern needed to heat IRR. He used a forced-air, ceramic heater to do this. However, the product didn’t perform well at all during the demonstration. Vern discovered that this was due to overheating. In fact, the product overheated 40°F / 22°C past its maximum workable temperature. This ultimately cost him a whole pallet of his product and the embarrassment he experienced in front of the airport staff.

Vern’s product is a great one. And his IRR wasn’t the thing to blame for this untimely setback. Instead, the culprit was merely an unreliable heating solution. Since then, Vern uses the Powerblanket® Hot Box for efficient and regulated heating of IRR.
