Viscosity is a complicated and sometimes confusing topic and achieving lower viscosity is a challenge during cold winter months.

VISCOSITY REDUCTION BASICS

A fluid that is viscous will be thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency.  Viscosity can be affected by friction and/or temperature.  For example, consider what happens when you need some ketchup on your burger.  If you simply invert the bottle and expect the ketchup to flow freely, you are a rookie in the sport of burger-eating.  A pro knows to shake the bottle and then to proceed with caution, because once you have decreased viscosity, due to the shaking, the ketchup can flow quite rapidly.

Now think about honey, certainly a substance that is thick, sticky and semifluid.  Simply shaking a jar of honey will not guarantee any flow.  Honey cooled in a refrigerator will have little to no flow because it has been cooled, but when warmed appropriately*, there is a viscosity reduction and honey will flow smoothly.

LOWER VISCOSITY AND TEMPERATURE

A fluid’s viscosity strongly depends on its temperature. Along with the shear rate, temperature really is the dominating influence. The higher the temperature is, the lower a substance’s viscosity is. The relationship between temperature and viscosity is inversely proportional for all liquids. A change in temperature always affects the viscosity – it depends on the substance just how much it is influenced by a temperature change. For some fluids a decrease of 1°C (1.8F) already causes a 10 % increase in viscosity.

Baking with Honey

BOB’S BREAD

Recipe by Bobby Porter, Beekeeper, Redmond, UT

This bread recipe is very easy, and creates a bread with a softer crust.

 

PART 1

Whisk the following ingredients:

2 ½ C very warm water

1 T yeast

2-4 T raw honey

1-2 T olive oil

–Set aside to allow yeast to grow a bit.

 

PART 2

Combine:

6 C flour

2 ½ tsp salt

 

Mix Part 1 and Part 2.  The mix should be sticky.  Let it double in size.  Cut into 2 sections.  Knead each section then place in 2 greased bread pans. Let each loaf rise again until each is 1 inch above the pan.

 

Bake at 375 for 32 minutes or until the top is golden.  Oil/butter the crust when removed from oven.

Our primary motivation for writing this blog isn’t to disparage traditional band heaters, but we do feel it’s important to tell people about their shortcomings.  Frankly, no one should be using traditional band heaters anymore.

If you’ve dealt with traditional band heaters, then perhaps you have some reservations regarding the usefulness, efficiency, and safety of such a solution. If you’ve never heard of insulated band heaters, then you’re in for a treat. Here we compare the two to see who comes out on top.

Spray Foam Heating TechnologyI attended the ICAA Trade Show and Convention this past weekend in Tucson, AZ. It was like a quick getaway to ‘summer’ as we are enveloped in the fast approaching autumn season here in Utah. I feel like the ICAA did an excellent job of bringing together representatives from all facets of the insulation industry. There was everybody from the large corporate insulation and equipment manufacturers down to the one-man band spray foam insulation installers.

The overall feeling I walked away with is that there are two very polarizing sides within the exact same industry. There are those (both individuals and corporations) who have been a part of this industry since the beginning of mankind that are content, almost to a fault, with the status quo. “My great, great, great granddaddy did it that way. If it worked for him, it’ll work for me!”  Hmmm. I’ll check back with you in 10 years and see if you’re still in business.

On the other hand, there are the innovators, the movers and the shakers striving to eliminate the status quo. Why? Because that is what they do. They are the Steve Jobs of the industry. Their desire to create something new flows through their bloodstream. They can’t help but bring new ideas and products to a market that is ever changing and yet stale at the same time.

I would like to applaud 2 companies that presented innovative ideas at this tradeshow. First, Graco, the worldwide leaders in fluid handling technologies. Their partnership with 2-track in bringing the industry a remote reporting technology is forward thinking and hinges strongly on the highly adopted use of smartphone technology. This will provide tighter job site monitoring and cost control, resulting in quicker project turnaround time and more money to the bottom line. I applaud you.

You’ve succeeded in helping the homeowner understand the benefits of using spray foam insulation vs. old school fiberglass batts. They understand the economical benefits to their budget by using spray foam; it creates an airtight seal keeping warm air inside during the winter and blazing hot air outside during the summer months, thus reducing their overall energy bill.

Now, the job falls on your shoulders to make sure they receive the high quality insulation they are expecting. As the popularity of spray foam has quickly increased, so has the need for contractors to adapt their services to include spray foam installation. This quick change has proven detrimental in many ways to the overall quality of the resulting spray foam insulation.

 

Contractors need to focus on:

  • Quality Control – You must have at least a simple quality control program to ensure consistency across insulation projects. If your focus doesn’t start here, your business won’t succeed.
  • Good Form – Consistent spray control must be used to avoid large gaps in spray foam.
  • Correct Mix – Proper care should be taken by frequently checking the mix ratio of your proportioners, pumps and sprayers. Incorrect mix ratios can diminish the R-value, performance and longevity of the spray foam.
  • Temperature Control – Just as the correct mix is critical, the correct application temperature must also be maintained in order to ensure high performance. However, that’s not the only reason to pay attention to temperature control. The yield of your spray foam can decrease if the foam is too cold. Inconsistent and excessive localized heat can result in burned product. This affects your bottom line and the profitability of your projects.

 

There are several spray foam training programs available to contractors to help. I recommend finding one in your area or attending an industry conference. Whether you’re brand new to the industry or a veteran, there is not a better time than now to increase your knowledge and techniques.

For temperature control, I recommend an insulated heating blanket. Some advantages of the insulated blanket over the “strap” or “band” type heaters are:

  • Lower energy usage (heats your product not the air)
  • More even heat (more surface area for your product to absorb the heat)
  • Heats the entire drum which means less heat damage to your product
  • The ambient conditions have less effect (more effective in cold climates)

Band Heater Alternatives

Band Heater AlternativesBand heaters have been around for a long time. For a while, people mistakenly viewed them as the only option for heating a drum, bucket, or barrel. But, if you’ve ever used them, you know that no one likes them. They get too hot and burn product. They are unreliable. The thermostats are unpredictable and will over-heat. And, the life expectancy is short.

By design, a band heater will provide a lot of heat in one, centralized location of the drum, bucket, or barrel, and that is not good. The extreme heat causes burnt and overheated product while leaving the rest of the container unheated and unprotected. This makes it virtually impossible to uniformly heat your container and maintain optimal temperature.

A blanket-type heater is an alternative to band heaters and I recommend it for a drum heater or bucket heater. This style of heater wraps the drum or bucket completely, offering uniform heat top to bottom. This helps provide consistent heat everywhere while also insulating your product from the wind, cold, and other unfavorable ambient conditions.

The spray foam industry has used band heaters for many years as most of their product is housed and transported in drum, bucket, and tote containers. The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) also recommends the use of a heat blanket-type heater and to avoid the use of band heaters, “low heat flux blanket-type heaters work well to maintain drum temperatures. Avoid use of band-type heaters or other high heat flux heaters.”

Heating blanket-type drum heaters are also more efficient at heating than a band heater. The data below details the results of a comparison test between a 720 watt  blanket-type drum heater and a 1200 watt 4” silicone band heater. Each heater was used to heat a 55 gallon barrel filled to capacity with water. Beginning temperature prior to heating was 32 degrees F.

The results show the water heated with the 4 inch silicone band heater reached a maximum temperature of 61 degrees F above ambient temperature in approximately 42 hours. After removing electrical power from the heater, the water temperature fell to the ambient temperature of 34 degrees F in approximately 33 hours. The blanket-type drum heater heated the water to 70 degrees F above ambient temperature in approximately 22 hours.  With an additional 72 hours the water reached a steady state temperature of approximately 110 degrees F above ambient temperature.  After removing electrical power from the heater the water temperature dropped to the ambient temperature of 34 degrees F in approximately 164 hours.

How Can I Evenly Cure My Epoxy Without Burning It?

When it comes to curing epoxy, nothing is more important than a constant and uniform heat distribution. With a proper cure, you ensure the integrity and strength of your product. When epoxies are properly cured, they will become solid. The picture below is a good example of how epoxy cures depending on heat and time.

How Can I Evenly Cure My Epoxy Without Burning It

An uneven cure of epoxy can have several negative consequences, including:

  • Discoloration/Yellowing
  • Color Variation
  • Blushing
  • Uneven Gloss
  • Poor Inter-Coat Adhesion

9 Things to consider in an Epoxy Heating/Curing Solution

  1. Prevent uneven gloss and poor inter-coat adhesion by finding a solution that evenly heats over the entire surface area.
  2. Find a heating solution that will maintain the proper application temperature. The warmer the resin and hardener, the lower the viscosity.
  3. Find a customizable heating solution that will properly fit the size and shape of your application to maintain maximum control. A cool epoxy is more difficult to meter and combine with the resin and hardener.
  4. Ensure less maintenance downtime by finding a heating product with a track record of performance.
  5. Ensure that the epoxy resin and hardener will flow through dispensing pumps easily by maintaining the appropriate heat.
  6. Ensure more cross-linking by warming the materials while mixing to initiate a better chemical reaction.
  7. Prevent air bubble entrapment and safeguard the strength and effectiveness of the epoxy by having the right heating solution.
  8. Prevent contamination by not using Kerosene or propane heaters since they can inhibit the cure as well as contaminate epoxy surfaces.
  9. Prevent under-curing, as it can cause delaminations and product failures by finding an evenly heated and temperature-controlled solution.
